Evening Routine

Our town square

As I shared here, I enjoy my morning routine using the steps from the Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. They’re a great way to start the day.

I didn’t realize until last night, but when I’m home, I also have a nice evening routine: walking the dog.

Every night before I go to bed, I take the dog for one last walk to do her thing. Most of the time it’s just her and I, but sometimes my wife or one of the kids comes with me. Either way is great. When it’s just the dog and me, I get some nice time to look back on the day, and to think ahead to the next day. When my family comes, then it’s nice to have some quiet conversation with them.

We have a regular route that we take. It takes us by the car wash that we own so that I can make sure the doors are closed and pipes don’t freeze overnight. Some houses along our route have nice Christmas light displays. I enjoy looking at them every night. Sometimes our route takes us through the town square. It is lit nicely at this time of year.

Ending the day with quiet reflection is gratifying. Evaluating the day, generating ideas for tomorrow, being mindful of the people I was with and the places I was help to remind help me to be more aware of what’s going on around me. The peacefulness of my small town at night and the dark sections between streetlights where I can see the stars provide a sense of serenity.

The first step of the miracle morning routine is ‘Silence’. It’s nice to also end the day with the same.

What is your evening routine? Leave a note in the comments to let me know what it is and the benefits that you get from that routine.
